Napoli (Naples) Area - Campania Region
Scenes from Napoli (Naples), the capital of the region of Campania and of the province of Naples. The city is known for its rich history, art, culture and gastronomy, playing an important role throughout much of its existence; it is over 2,800 years old. Naples is located halfway between two volcanic areas, the volcano Mount Vesuvius and the Phlegraean Fields, sitting on the coast by the Gulf of Naples. Nearby, Ercolano, the lesser-known-but-just-as-important excavated ancient city from the Mt. Vesuvio eruption in 79 AD. In fact, Ercolano is better preserved than Pompeii, thanks to the volcanic mud that covered it instead of the volcanic ash that buried Pompeii. Many of the buildings still have their roofs and balconies whereas in Pompeii, only walls are still standing. Mt. Vesuvio still looms omniously over the site and the modern town of Ercolano.
