I first met "Enzo" several years ago while we were students taking an Italian class with Italian Instructor Christopher Celi as part of the WisItalia-Madison Italian classes taught at the Italian Workmen's Club in Madison. He used the name "Enzo" in class, and Vince outside of class. Enzo was always a delight to talk to. He was very soft-spoken, told wonderful stories, and we all enjoyed his "novità." Vincent George Puglielli, age 68, died Friday, March 11, 2011, at home following a six-year battle with cancer.

After several years, the resolution honoring Italian-born architect Andrea Palladio was passed by the U.S. Congress with the support of more than 50 Members of Congress, more than 25 organizations and Giulio Terzi, Ambassador of Italy to the United States. The House passed House Concurrent Resolution 259 on 11/17/2010, and the Senate passed it on 12/6/2010. The resolution, "(1) recognizes the 500th anniversary of Andrea Palladio's birth year; (2) recognizes his tremendous influence on architecture in the United States; and (3) expresses its gratitude for the enhancement his life and career has bestowed upon the Nation's built environment."

Celebrate by learning more about what Italian-Americans have done for our country. Every year the U.S. president signs an executive order designating the month of October as National Italian American Heritage Month. Passed by the Assembly on September 22, 2009, State of Wisconsin 2009 ASSEMBLY RESOLUTION 10. Senator Peter Barca and Representative Joe Parisi (two of the authors of Italian descent) were very instrumental in passing this resolution.

December 31, 2009 - with an year-end message from the President of the Republic to the Italians, the Quirinal launched its official channel on YouTube. Accessible at www.youtube.com/presidenzarepubblica (exit WisItalia), the channel will collect footage of the most significant activities of the Head of State.

2009-10 School Year. WisItalia, in conjunction with the Consul General and the Italian government, is able to give certain Wisconsin schools/programs that teach the Italian language, grant funds for their language programs. Funds can be used to buy materials, to augment salaries, or for activities that furthers the study of the Italian language.

In November 2009, Clara Sereni came to Madison and Chicago. Clara gave a talk about her writings: how food and cooking traverse the private and the public, encompassing Italian literature and Italian Cinema. Clara and Giovanna presented the English translation of her book, Keeping House: A Novel in Recipes.

On Wednesday, November 4, 2009, President Barack Obama and U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan visited Wright Middle School in Madison. Wright is a 12-year-old charter school at 1717 Fish Hatchery Road that emphasizes getting involved and creating positive change in the community.

An Italian Language Immersion program was held for two weeks (June 15 – 26, 2009) in Madison with the participation of 6 children, age 4-9. “Il prato verde e il lago azzurro” (Green meadow and blue lake), the name of the camp, was organized and taught by Giovanna Miceli Jeffries, with the assistance of Tony Manzo.

On June 13, 2009, Giovanna Miceli Jeffries, representing WisItalia, attended the second national conference on the status and promotion of Italian in the USA. The conference was successfully organized by NIAF and the Italian Embassy of Washington D.C. to bring together representatives from various Italian-American organizations, Italian language non–profit organizations (Enti Gestori, such as WisItalia), representatives of Italian departments, Italian teachers and professional associations, consular educational officers, etc.

On Sunday, September 28, 2008, 55 intrepid golfers took to the links at Sun Prairie Golf Course to compete in the 2008 Italian Charity Golf Classic. Proceeds went to the Capital Candlelighters, a non-profit organization serving families whose children have been diagnosed with cancer.

On March 6, 2007, high school students participated in an Italian Day event, held at the UW-Madison, WI campus. To test their proficiency, the students participated in Italian language competitions (i.e, poetry, skits and a poster contest).
