Tuscan Winemaker Dinner. Violante Gardini, Owner. Donatella Cinelli Colombini, Montalcino. Begins at 6:30 pm. Cost is $90/person, plus tax and gratuity. Ristorante Bartolotta, 7616 W. State St., Wauwatosa, WI, 414 771-7910.

This small winery founded in 1998 by Donatella Cinelli Colombini in Montalcino is one of Italy's most unique wineries because it is run solely by women, seven of them to be more precise. Colombini produces spectacular wines including a Chianti, several Brunellos and Tuscan Sangiovese blends, a Vin Santo, a Traminer (their only white) and even a rose. Of particular interest, Colombini makes a blend of Sangiovese and Foglia Tonda, an almost extinct and forgotten Tuscan grape that Donatella is almost single-handedly resurrecting. They also make their own grappa and olive oil made of classic Tuscan cultivars. Colombini's beautiful labels are a prelude to the consistent quality of their wines, which was acknowledged in 2003 when Donatella won an "Oscar" for best Italian wine producer. Donatella's daughter Violante Gardini will be on site discussing her mother's wines, restaurant and inn. Violante also runs a small store in the heart of Siena which specializes in a variety of hand-crafted Tuscan wares. Please join them for a very special evening of unforgettable wines.

"An utter blast! Happily blends low comedy, high sentiment, neorealism and farce – almost a film festival unto itself!" (A.O. Scott).

Figaro and Susanna are set to be married, but Count Almaviva has plans of his own. At the end of the day, who will cut the cake? Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro turns one day of madness into comic gold, all set to the composer's brilliant, shimmering score. Madison Opera assembles an unbeatable cast for the opening of it's 50th Anniversary Season, with Jason Hardy starring as Figaro, fresh off of rave reviews for his performance in New York City Opera's Don Giovanni. The radiant Anya Matanovic sings Susanna and Melody Moore (Opera in the Park, 2008) returns as the Countess. Metropolitan Opera baritone Jeff Mattsey sings the Count. Maestro John DeMain conducts, with stage direction by A. Scott Parry. Visit the Madison Opera website (exit WisItalia)for more information and to purchase tickets.

Shotgun weddings, kidnapping, attempted murder, emergency dental work—the things Don Vincenzo will do to restore his family's honor! Pietro Germi's Seduced and Abandoned was the follow-up to his international sensation Divorce Italian Style, and in many ways it's even more audacious—a rollicking yet raw series of escalating comic calamities that ensue in a small village when sixteen-year-old Agnese (the beautiful Sandrelli) loses her virginity to her sister's lascivious fiancé.

La Traviata - Madison Opera, Overture Center (Overture Hall), 201 State Street, Madison, WI 53703-2214. Featuring the Madison Symphony Orchestra and Madison Opera Chorus. Sung in Italian with projected English translations.

A free-spirited courtesan is tamed by true love, but for how long? The tragic tale of Violetta Valery and Alfredo Germont has mesmerized opera audiences for decades with some of Verdi's most recognizable music and transfixing characters. La Traviata brings the 2010-11 mainstage season to a close in a lavish production with sets from the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Elizabeth Caballero (Carmen, 2009) returns to Madison as Violetta after recent performances in the role had Opera News calling her "an excellent heroine...commanding and vulnerable by turns." The young Italian tenor Giuseppe Varano makes his US debut as Alfredo, with Donnie Ray Albert (Opera in the Park, 2005) as Giorgio Germont. Maestro John DeMain conducts, with stage direction by Garnett Bruce. Raise a toast as we celebrate 50 years of opera in Madison... "Libiamo, libiamo!" Visit the Madison Opera website (exit WisItalia)for more information and to purchase tickets.
