Italian Reds - A Mini-course. University of Wisconsin - Parkside in Kenosha. A large number of red wines come from all over Italy. Pasta: It’s Not as Hard as You Think - A Mini-course. University of Wisconsin - Parkside in Kenosha. This fun and interactive class will present pasta rolled out to make fettuccine and ravioli as well as gnocchi. For this course, using your hands is just as important as using your pasta machine. The one night course, 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm is taught by Chef Rene Saulnier. Fee is $50 with a limit of 12 participants. Acclaimed Author Elizabeth Bettina to Speak about the Rescue of Italian Jews during the Holocaust. At 7:00 p.m. at the Italian Community Center, 631 East Chicago Street, Milwaukee, WI, the Nathan and Esther Pelz Holocaust Education Resource Center, the National Italian American Foundation and the Italian Community Center will host author Elizabeth Bettina and Holocaust survivor Ursula Korn-Selig who will speak about Italy and the Jews during World War II. Bettina, a New York-based marketing executive, spent her childhood summers visiting her family in the Italian village of Campagna. Her book, It Happened in Italy, tells the amazing story of how her discovery of a single faded photo taken in 1940 led her on a quest that uncovered the little-known story of how thousands of Jews were saved throughout the Italian countryside during World War II. The public is invited. No charge to attend. Donations are gratefully accepted. Books will be available for purchase and signing by the author. Palm Weaving Workshop. The Italian-American Club - Ladies Auxillary, 2217 52nd Street, Kenosha, Wisconsin, will host a 2-hour workshop, starting at 3:00 pm, presented by Gene Fedeli and Micheli Scalisi, who have been teaching this Italian tradition in the Chicago area for about 8 years. Participants will have hands-on experience and learn the weaving of crosses, leaves, ribbons, bells also known as artichokes, and a chance to see many more woven palm styles. Presentation by Tony Zignego, author of Milwaukee's Italian Heritage: Mediterranean Roots in Midwestern Soil. He will discuss his book at 7:00 pm at the general membership meeting of the Italian Community Center (ICC) 631 East Chicago Street, Milwaukee, WI. Author bio: Anthony Zignego is a Milwaukee-born historian who has earned a BA and an MA in history from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He specializes in nineteenth- and twentieth-century United States immigration and urban history, and this is his first book. Zignego has taught college courses on United States and European history. He speaks Spanish, Italian, and English. He is currently employed by Zignego Co., Inc., in Waukesha, Wisconsin. For more information, view the Italian Book Corner page. Raphael: The Woman with the Veil (pdf) at the Milwaukee Milwaukee Art Museum. Located at 700 N. Art Museum Drive, Milwaukee, WI 53202. This artwork is on loan from the Pitti Palace in Florence, Italy. "Woman with the Veil" (La Donna Velata) is considered an invaluable treasure among the paintings in the collection. The portrait, which Raphael painted in about 1516, had a profound influence on artists both of his day and since; not only is it beautifully painted, but a myth of intrigue envelops the work—it is rumored that the sitter was the artist's mistress. At one point, the portrait was considered the most famous painting in the world. Museum hours are Tuesday - Sunday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, Thursday until 8:00 pm. Admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors (65+), students with ID, and active military. Free to Museum Members and children 12 & under.
