Campo d’italiano “Il Prato Verde e Lago Azzurro” for Children (5-10 year olds) in Madison, Wisconsin, June 14-25, 2010 (2 hours/day) - The name of the Italian Summer Camp is taken from the first song students will learn the first day (a well known song, "Ho visto un prato," beloved by generations of Italian children). The program is designed to allow students to acquire an understanding and develop basic communication skills in Italian language while exploring a European culture and its ways by engaging directly in activities and functions every day. They will follow a routine that is meant to reinforce what they have acquired each previous day and facilitate the acquisition of new topics. It is designed as an immersion language and culture experience with the contemplated outcome of having children with no previous knowledge or understanding of spoken Italian acquire linguistic communicative skills and an appreciation of Italian/European culture and ways of life.

Summer Italian Opera Program in Kenosha
Kenosha Middle and High School students will be preparing the opera, "La Cenerentola" by Gioachino Rossini. The libretto was written by Jacopo Ferretti, and it is based on the fairy tale, Cinderella. Rossini composed "La Cenerentola" when he was 25 years old, following the success of "The Barber of Seville" the year before. "La Cenerentola," which he completed in a period of three weeks, is considered to have some of his finest writing for solo voice and ensembles. [summary from Wikipedia (exit WisItalia)]
Auditions are March 27 and 29, 2010. The Kenosha summer program starts June 15, 2010, and ends with the 1-hour performance on July 23, 2010, at 7:00 pm. This opera will be performed in Italian. The objectives of this summer program are to teach and coach students to learn "Italian for Opera" and work with students throughout the preparation and perfomances. The libretto will be reviewed, as well as the various songs translated by the students for them to better appreciate the opera. Artistic Director Kathryn Peperkorn and Italian Teacher, Ralph Annina will be coordinating this program, in conjunction with the Opera ala Carte, SouthEast Wisconsin Performing Arts (SWEPA). View the SWEPA website at http://sewpa.org/ (exit WisItalia) for details.
