Hello Giovanna and Rita!
I am in the process of planning my dissertation in Second Language Acquisition. The general topic I want to investigate is Service-learning and how it can be used for the development of linguistic skills and cultural awareness.
The general plan is to follow students from UW-Madison (or another
institution) as they take a course in Italian that incorporates a
certain number of hours performing service to an Italian-speaking
population.
I need to identify a population of native Italian speakers with whom learners who are seeking to improve their Italian skills and cultural knowledge might interact. I wondered if either of you were aware of older immigrants or heritage speakers of Italian who may reside in local nursing homes. This is just one idea I had in order to identify a population that may benefit from interacting with Italian-learners-- if you have other ideas, please share them with me!
Thank you so much!
